How to Add Google Meet Live Classes to Academy LMS

Table of Contents

When Academy LMS students have to hunt for a Meet link in their email, some miss the class. Here you connect GoodMeet to Academy LMS and put live sessions on your course pages and lessons instead.

A meeting can sit on the course page, at the top of a lesson, or both. Students see the date and time, a countdown when the class is close, and a join button while it is live. You can attach meetings from GoodMeet in WordPress admin, and instructors can do the same from the Academy frontend dashboard.

By the end of this guide, you will have:

  • Academy LMS and GoodMeet working together on your site
  • A Google Meet session listed on an Academy course page
  • A live session card at the top of a lesson
  • A choice of who can join: course students only, or anyone with the link
  • Instructors managing live sessions for the courses they teach
  • A clear picture of what visitors, students and instructors see

Estimated setup time: 10 minutes. Attaching a meeting never changes course progress, because the meeting is not a curriculum item.

Note: Requires GoodMeet Pro.

Before you begin #

Make sure you have:

  • An administrator account on your WordPress site
  • A Google account you want your meetings to belong to
  • At least one Academy course with a lesson, for example Data Science Essentials
  • Academy’s frontend dashboard page set up, if instructors will use the dashboard steps
  • A GoodMeet Pro license, for the Pro features in this guide

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Install Academy LMS #

First, make sure Academy LMS is installed and activated. GoodMeet adds live sessions to its courses, so it needs to be there first.

  1. In the WordPress admin menu, go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for Academy LMS.
  3. Click Install Now, then Activate.
Add Plugins screen with the Academy LMS search result highlighted
Search for Academy LMS, then install and activate it.

If Academy LMS is already active, skip to the next step.

Step 2: Install and activate GoodMeet #

GoodMeet creates the Google Meet links and calendar events. The free plugin comes from WordPress.org, and GoodMeet Pro adds the Academy LMS integration on top of it.

  1. Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for GoodMeet.
  3. Click Install Now, then Activate.
Add Plugins screen with the GoodMeet search result highlighted
Install the free GoodMeet plugin first. GoodMeet Pro builds on it.

To use the Pro features in this guide, add GoodMeet Pro from inside GoodMeet. There is nothing to upload.

  1. In WordPress admin, open GoodMeet and click Upgrade, then complete the checkout.
  2. Go to GoodMeet > Account. Your license shows there, and GoodMeet offers to install GoodMeet Pro.
  3. Install GoodMeet Pro, then activate it. If GoodMeet shows Activate Pro, click it.

Note: If you already have a license, open GoodMeet > Account and install Pro from there. GoodMeet shows Download Pro when your license is active but Pro is not installed yet.

Step 3: Connect your Google account #

GoodMeet cannot create Meet links until your Google account is connected. You do this once for the whole site.

  1. Go to GoodMeet > Settings and click Connect.
  2. Upload the JSON file from your Google Cloud OAuth client on the Google Cloud Credentials card.
  3. Click Continue to Google.
  4. Sign in with your Google account and approve access.

Read our step-by-step Google setup guide for the full walkthrough, including how to create the JSON file.

Step 4: Turn on the Academy LMS integration #

This switch turns on everything Academy-related in GoodMeet. It adds course pickers to the meeting form, menus to the Academy dashboard and live sessions to your course pages.

  1. Go to GoodMeet > Integrations.
  2. In Categories, click Courses & LMS.
  3. On the Academy LMS card, switch the toggle on.
Integrations screen with the Courses & LMS category open and the Academy LMS toggle highlighted
The Academy LMS card shows Active when the switch is on.

Now comes the main part. Academy’s own course builder has no place for add-on fields, so you attach meetings in one of two places:

  • GoodMeet’s meeting form in WordPress admin (Steps 5 to 9)
  • The Live sessions screen in the Academy dashboard (Steps 10 to 13)

Both write the same data. A change in one shows in the other.

Step 5: Open the meeting form #

The course options live in the same form you use to create any meeting.

  1. Go to GoodMeet > All Meetings and click Add new, or open an existing meeting to edit it.
  2. Fill in Meeting name and the date and time as usual.
  3. In the step list on the left, click Access and controls.

The Add to a course card lives in the Access and controls step.

Step 6: Pick the course #

The Add to a course card reads “Show it on a course page or in a lesson.” Here you choose the course the meeting belongs to.

  1. Scroll to the Add to a course card.
  2. Click Search courses and type part of the course name, for example “Data”.
  3. Choose your course from the Academy LMS group.

Courses are grouped by LMS when more than one LMS is active.

Step 7: Choose where it shows #

A meeting can appear in the course page’s session list or at the top of one lesson.

  1. Open Show it on.
  2. Keep Course page, or pick a lesson. Lessons are grouped under their topic names.
Show it on menu open with Course page and the lessons of Module 1
Pick Course page for the course list, or a lesson for a card at the top of that lesson.

Important: A lesson holds one meeting. If the lesson already has one, the card warns you: “Replaces “…” on this lesson.”

Step 8: Add the meeting to the course #

  1. Click Add to course.
Add to course button highlighted below the Show it on field
The button turns grey with “Already added.” when you pick the same place twice.

To show the same meeting in more places, use the Add another field and repeat Steps 6 to 8.

Step 9: Choose who can join (Access and controls) #

Each place you added appears as a row in the card. Below the rows, Who can join decides whether the meeting is for enrolled students or open to anyone with the link.

  1. To remove a place, click the × on its row.
  2. Next to Who can join, click Change.
  3. Choose Course students or Anyone with link.
  4. Click Create meeting, or Update meeting when you edit.

Course students also includes instructors and admins. Page access from GoodMeet settings still applies.

Note: Course students is the default. Enrolled students, the course’s instructors and admins can open the meeting page. Everyone else sees an “Enroll to join” message.

Step 10: Open Live sessions in the Academy dashboard #

Instructors can attach meetings without leaving the Academy frontend dashboard. Administrators can use this screen too.

  1. Open your Academy dashboard and switch to Teaching.
  2. Click Live sessions.
  3. Find the course and click Manage.

Each course shows how many sessions it has, for example “3 on course · 1 in lessons”.

Note: Instructors see and manage only the courses they teach: courses they authored or co-teach. Administrators see every course, such as Design Basics: Free Starter and Brand Design Masterclass.

Step 11: Add meetings to the course page #

The Course sessions card lists every meeting shown on the course page. The list shows live meetings first, then upcoming ones from the soonest, then ended ones. Each upcoming row shows its time in the meeting’s own time zone, with a small zone label.

  1. Under Course sessions, open Choose a meeting and pick one. The list offers live and upcoming meetings, soonest first.
  2. Click Add To Course. The page reloads with “Meeting added to the course.”

“Enrolled students only, unless a meeting is public.” Create Meeting opens the meeting form.

To take a meeting off the course, click Remove on its row.

Step 12: Give lessons a live session #

Each lesson can carry one meeting, shown at the top of the lesson.

  1. Under Lesson sessions, pick a meeting next to each lesson, or No live session.
  2. Click Save Lesson Sessions. The page shows “Lesson sessions saved.”

“One per lesson, shown at its top.”

In each lesson picker, live meetings come first, then upcoming ones from the soonest. Ended meetings come last, newest first, marked “, ended”.

Step 13: Create meetings from the Google Meeting menu #

Instructors can also create a new meeting right from the dashboard.

  1. In the Academy dashboard Teaching menu, click Google Meeting.
  2. Click Add new. The form has the same Add to a course card as in Steps 6 to 9.

The list shows your own meetings, soonest first.

Note: Google Meeting shows for Academy instructors. Live sessions shows for Academy instructors and administrators.

Step 14: See it on your course page #

Open the course in a private browser window to check the result as a visitor. The course page shows a Live sessions block between Course Overview and Course Content. It lists dates and titles with no join link, plus one Enroll to join link.

Benefits of using GoodMeet with Academy LMS #

  • Schedule once, show everywhere: One class appears on the course page, in the lesson and in Google Calendar.
  • Fewer missed classes: Times carry a zone label, a countdown starts a day before, and Join now appears when the class goes live.
  • Instructors handle their own courses: They add live sessions from the Academy dashboard, without opening WordPress admin.
  • Enrolled students only, if you want: With Course students, only enrolled students, instructors and admins can open the meeting.

What students see #

Logged-in users who are not enrolled #

A logged-in user who is not enrolled sees the same list as a visitor: dates and titles, no join link, and Enroll to join.

Enrolled students #

Each upcoming row gets a Details button. While a session is live, the row says Live now and the button becomes Join now. A countdown appears when the start is less than a day away.

Upcoming rows show the day, the time and a small time zone label, such as “Today at 11:00 pm US/Eastern”. Times follow the site’s time format and use the meeting’s own time zone. When the meeting has Show times in the visitor’s timezone switched on, each visitor sees their own time zone instead.

Ended sessions stay in the list. They show Watch recording when a recording exists.

Instructors and admins #

Course instructors and admins see the same buttons as enrolled students.

Instructors can open every session of their own course.

Inside a lesson #

A lesson with a live session shows the meeting card at the top of the lesson.

The card has the same states and buttons as the course list.

Note: The lesson card needs Academy’s Blocks learn page or its PHP learn page. Academy’s default React learn page has no place for it, so GoodMeet lists lesson sessions on the course page under In lessons instead.

On the meeting page #

Students who open a meeting from a course get a Back to course link at the top. The link appears for logged-in users who may join one of the meeting’s courses.

Someone who is not enrolled and opens the meeting link directly sees a locked card instead.

On a phone #

The Live sessions list fits small screens. Each row stacks the date, title and button.

Troubleshooting #

The Add to a course card does not appear in the meeting form #

The card only loads when a supported LMS is active and switched on, and the user is logged in.

Check that:

  • Academy LMS is active.
  • Its switch is on under GoodMeet > Integrations.
  • You reloaded the meeting form after turning it on.

“No courses yet” in Live sessions or the course picker #

Instructors see only the courses they teach: courses they authored, or courses that list them as a co-instructor. This applies to Live sessions and to the meeting form. Academy lets every instructor edit any course, but GoodMeet still keeps instructor actions to their own courses.

  1. Make the instructor the author or a co-instructor of the course, or
  2. Attach the meeting as an administrator.

“Could not save. You need edit rights on the course and the meeting.” #

You can attach only meetings you host or created, to courses you teach. Ask the meeting host or an administrator to attach it, or create your own meeting with Create Meeting.

“Live sessions are switched off for Academy LMS.” #

The Academy LMS switch is off. Go to GoodMeet > Integrations and turn it back on.

Live sessions or Google Meeting is missing from the dashboard menu #

Both items sit in the Teaching area and need an instructor account.

Check that:

  • The dashboard is switched to Teaching.
  • The user is an approved Academy instructor.

The lesson does not show the meeting card #

Academy’s default React learn page has no hook for extra content. Students find the session on the course page under In lessons. To show it inside the lesson, switch Academy to the Blocks learn page or the PHP learn page.

Students see “For students of this course” #

The meeting is set to Course students, and this user is not enrolled in any of its courses.

  1. Enroll the student, or
  2. Set Who can join to Anyone with link. Page access from GoodMeet settings still applies.

Students see Details but no Join now #

Join now shows only while the session is live, between its start and end time. Wait for the start time. The meeting page itself has the Meet link and a countdown.
